Opportunity in the Job Place
It becomes something that is internalized within them. And how easy would it be for them, or anyone, who has been submerged for eight or more hours in a place they despise, around people they don’t like, to leave that environment and have a good rest of the day? Sure, they may have a sense of relief that they are out of there but it isn’t likely they’ll have much energy or drive to enjoy much else.
So it pretty much is a lose-lose. But it doesn’t have to be.
I’m sure we have all experienced work environments we haven’t entirely enjoyed. And the thought of giving any sign of happiness on the job feels like having a target on us that says, knock me down or kick me here because I’m happy. And we don’t want to give anyone a reason to bring us down, right?
This really is a question we have to ask ourselves. And if we weight the two sides, which one is really the one we want to have? Let’s take a quick look.
We know what it’s like being unhappy on the job. We can find the reasons to stay unhappy. We can point fingers at the boss and the co-workers and the company itself. And by doing this, we can find reason after reason to stay down on the job. We feel justified in it.
Now the other side has little to do with the people at work. So I want you to take your pointing finger, turn it up towards the sky, put out your thumb, and see where it is pointing. It should be aimed right at you. Why? Because you are the one who can make this choice and you alone.
So, with that, let’s provide option number two. Let’s say you go to work and you do your job to the best of your ability and meanwhile, you have a backup plan like, going to school to get a higher degree and eventually a different job, or you have a schedule for putting in a certain number of job applications per week, or a goal of making contacts or attending functions to meet people to network with. The opportunities are endless though not if we choose option one, staying unhappy. And as you saw, nowhere in the scope of options did it include giving any justification of any sort to the current work situation. It did, however, keep us energized, motivated, and happier. It’s your choice.
