Your email signature.

Most email clients allow you to put in place an automatic signature that is appended to every email you send out. If you have an email signature that goes out automatically all ready it might be time to review it.

When you are unemployed and your main focus is on winning a new job you want to make EVERY piece of communication you put out there, be it: online, offline, face to face, telephone and even texting work for you, without you even having to think about it.

As with every piece of marketing you create and distribute for your personal job search campaign think about it carefully and target it towards your ideal employer.

Here are some suggestions for what to create for you email signature so that it is quietly marketing for you with every email you send.

1. Your name, preferred job title and what your area of expertise is and a call to action eg:

John Doe, Experienced Taxation Accountant – finding tax deductions others might miss – call me (phone number) to discuss your needs or reply by email

2. Your name, preferred job title and specific results you have consistently achieved for previous employers eg:

Phil Lowe Like to know how I slashed 17.3% off my last employers administration costs – to find out call me now on (phone number) or reply by email

3. Your name, qualifications and your top 3 skills eg

Harriet Winters Know a business looking for a Finance Graduate with top leadership, analytical and reporting skills – view my resume here (and you could have a link to an online version of your resume – hint: before posting your resume publicly online I recommend you read and earlier article I wrote: “3 Job Search Warnings to Heed Before You Share Your Resume Publicly Online”)

Will this technique have your phone ringing off the hook, perhaps not; without it though you will never know what potential employer may continue to be blithely unaware of the uniqueness and value that you could bring to their organization to help them achieve their business goals.

Your action step: create at least 3 email signatures and test them out.
