Summer Job Search With Networking

While most people see summer as a time to kick back and take it easy, even put a job search on the back burner; however, the smartest job seekers will continue to meet people. Events in the summer tend to be more casual filled with events at parks, pools and backyards. This informal atmosphere makes it easy to walk up to a stranger, introduce yourself and make interesting small talk. During the summer months, everyone is always ready to talk about their vacation plans, summer sporting events or the unusually hot weather – so use one of these ideas as your opener!

After meeting a new person, exchanging names and sharing chit-chat, make sure to pass out a business card (not a resume – that’s just too formal). Also, don’t be shy to mention outright that you are looking for a job. While you shouldn’t beat around the bush, don’t be obnoxious either. Hopefully, your contact will also have a business card, and then you can follow up with a phone call or e-mail several days later to keep your name fresh.

If you are looking for summer networking events to attend, check out any career fairs, trainings and conferences that are coming to town in your area of specialty. Don’t let being unemployed keep you from attending, often the event coordinators have scholarships or will waive entrance fees if you are in need. Network is one of the most important steps toward getting new jobs.
