Once a career has been decided upon, and the education is being sought, an individual should begin thinking about their future in terms of career specifics. After earning an undergraduate degree, they will have an opportunity to narrow down their career choices so that they can claim expertise in a certain area of their field. Getting a graduate degree in a specific career also allows an individual to start their own company or take over another one that may be currently having some trouble.

Understand going in that you’re competing with candidates who have at least one, and possibly several Director of IT jobs under their belt. What makes you a viable candidate? Perhaps more accurately, what do you have that they don’t? If you can’t answer these questions satisfactorily, then you’re probably aiming too high.

When the economic tsunami swept through the economy in 2009, and by logical extension, through the job market, the “rules” of the “hiring game” changed, arguably for the foreseeable future. One of these NEW rules is this: relying exclusively, or even nearly exclusively, upon the Internet job boards to find your next job is a bad bet! Out of 100 résumés sent to a job posted on the Internet today, only one to two percent of them receive any kind of response, good, bad or indifferent!
