1. Be prepared with some answers in mind. Review possible interview questions so that you can take time to prepare answers ahead of time. Don’t let your answers sound like they are recited, but instead you should have ideas in your head about what kind of information you would like to get across in the interview. Then use that information to form the answers to the questions that you are asked.

2. Pause before answering each question. Don’t feel rushed to immediately start talking as soon as the interviewer ends the question, it is ok to take 3 to 5 seconds to catch your breath and think about your answer.

3. Speak slowly. It is easy to feel rushed and talk too quickly in an interview, but remember that you have time. Slow down and give the interviewer time to understand what you are saying. Your answers should be spoken in the speed of a regular conversation.

4. Be prepared with a few work-related stories. Answers that include stories or examples are always great to show how you can demonstrate the skills needed for the job. Think of a few short stories ahead of time that you can integrate into your interview. Make sure that the stories are short and to the point though, don’t ramble!

5. Dress the part. You should never show up to an interview dressed in scroungy clothing. It is always better to overdress, so you should err on the side of being too dressed up rather than not enough.

6. Learn the business jargon to fit in. Study the business jargon ahead of time so that you are comfortable talking about the topic during the interview. Also, know some basic facts about the company so that you can show that you are familiar with the business.

Once you get into the interview you need to ensure that you are able to combat your nerves and try not to appear too nervous as you will make the interview a lot harder. The interviewer will start making their own ideas of you as soon as you enter and if you enter with lots of nerves, you will be fighting against the interviewers nervous impression of you during the rest of the interview. Of course an interviewer would expect a little amount of nerves but being able to control them is what they are looking for.

Here are a few tips which should get you off to a good start. Firstly you need to smile broadly as you enter the room. You will want to greet the interviewer(s) by saying “hello” but also add something else to your sentence like “It is good to meet you” or “Great to meet you” and also make sure that you say it with enthusiasm and still smiling. After entering and as you say hello you want to maintain eye contact with the interviewer(s). It is also a good idea to give them a firm handshake but make sure it is not a vice-like grip, just firm. Then follow their lead by sitting down when they do.

You need to create the impression that you are are an upbeat and optimistic person. It is always good to compliment the interviewers about their organisation or make a positive comment about something that strikes you. For example you could say “I’m terribly impressed by this building, I really like your reception area” or “It’s great to be here and by the way your receptionists are so friendly” or “This is such a good location for your offices how long have you been based here?”. Whatever you say you need to make sure it is sincere.

Continue with your interview in a confident and polite manner, taking into consideration all the hints and tips available at how to carry out a successful interview. Following these few little hints you should have made a confident, friendly and approachable start and made a good impression with both the interviewer(s) and their staff.

Can it really take that much? Look at them! They want to be entertained. They want to find the right job candidate. They want you to be the right person for the job. You can’t bring your puppy into the interview to entertain them. Sure, that would get you noticed, but it probably wouldn’t get you the job.

Think about the industry you are interviewing for. What is always the most exciting part of any industry or subject? It’s the new stuff. It’s the things that are written about in the trade magazines and blogs. That’s what your interviewer will talk about in the hallway between interviews. The cutting edge stuff is what interests them.

Do you know the cutting edge? Do you know the job you are asking for? Tell them.

Take control of the interview. Talk about the current events of that industry. It will not be hard to work that in to the conversation. And, it will get the attention of the interviewer.

You may wonder what happens if the interviewer is strictly an administrative type that isn’t up to date on their own industry. That doesn’t matter. If you are passionate about the industry, the interviewer will know. After all, they hear that kind of talk every day from their coworkers. They will tell the people they work with that you sound just like the rest of the people in the company.

And that’s a good thing.

Take control of the job interview as soon as you can. Ask the interviewer questions. Talk about the industry. Show your passion. The interviewer will not care and will not ask about your biggest weakness, so you’ll avoid that question. If you want it, you will get the job.
