This is both frustrating and heartbreaking. Employees tend to build strong relationships with others who work with them. Some base their self-worth on the importance of their job. When all this goes away, what is left is a shell of the person. Going out to get a new job requires a whole host of new skills. Here’s just a few.

You have to know how to dress. This can make or break your interview. This is so important because it’s the first impression the employer gets of you. It tells them who you are and what you think of them. How you dress is that important. Regardless of what type of employment you’re seeking, you need to dress up for interview. That means slacks and a shirt and tie for men and a dress or dress slacks and a nice shirt for women. Even if you wouldn’t dress that way for working there, you need to dress up for the interview. It shows that you respect the process.

Next, you need a resume. Whether you’ve had one job or fifteen, a resume shows who you are on paper. On it should be your name, address, contact information, and job and education history. Once again, it doesn’t matter how much is in any of these categories. It matters that you’ve made the effort to show up with a resume. By the way, prospective employers check information on your resume. Do not lie about anything, even if you think it will make you look better. If you are caught, the employer will see you as someone they can’t trust and you will have lost the job before you even had it!

Finally, do your homework. Know a little bit about the company you are interviewing for. Know what you’d like to do there. Tell the interviewer about your goals. The interviewer will usually end with the question “Do you have any questions?” Have a question or two prepared about the company. It will show you’ve done your homework and did some research about the company.

Same holds true in my line of work. The most unfortunate are the people who know they need help, but it’s impossible for them to afford it. I get many requests for free job search and resume resources, so I thought I’d include them here. Are they as good as one-on-one coaching? I’m sure that it varies by program and the number of people who participate but if you’re stuck as to even how to start a resume or your job search, these are great places to start.

College Career Centers. These offices are an incredible wealth of information. If you’re currently in college, or even an alum, don’t hesitate to contact them to investigate what services they offer. Many have access to sophisticated assessment tests that can help you decide what jobs you’re best suited to based on your experience, interests and personality. They will help you research and identify some target companies for your job search, or even find other places to search for a job. Want to get into a very specific field, or have a challenging career-related situation that you need advice on? These are the places to go. You’ve spent 4 years of your life and tens of thousands of dollars, this office is really where the rubber meets the road to get you to the next phase.

With a tutoring job, your students or their parents might ask you for certain credentials.

- Some will just require that you’re in college.

- Some will want to see a bachelor’s degree or some certificate of advanced learning.

- Others, however, will be looking for past teaching or tutoring experiences from you.

Don’t fret if you’re thinking that your credentials aren’t enough; if you meet at least one requirement, then there’s a great chance that you’ll get various tutoring opportunities.

Things to include in your resume:

- References from your past tutoring experiences,

- Degrees, or relevant standardized scores,

- Coursework done at collegiate level, and

- Skills and achievement relevant to the job.

First, write your resume in Word or any other text editor. Then format it and convert it into PDF. Every time you apply for a tutoring job, remember to attach your resume.

After you’re done with your resume, you can start looking for tutoring jobs. Thanks to the internet that is really easy to do. Here are two web sites to look for your first tutoring job:

1) A good place to search at is www.care.com.

2) It is also a great idea to be updated with http://www.craigslist.org.

If you decided to go through Craigslist, you’ll find that various tutoring jobs are posted by agencies. It is best to acquaint yourself with one if you plan to continue tutoring in the future.

Otherwise, move away from agencies as they are likely to make you go through a lengthy process and give late payments.

Nevertheless, if you’re seeking long-term employment, then your best choice is to search for agencies and posting on their websites.
