It is very common for a job vacancy to attract hundreds of resumes. In order to improve your chances in the job search process, here are some important facts you need to take note:

Fact No.1:

Most of the hiring managers or HR managers usually do phone screen before they shortlist the job applicants. They want to make sure that the candidates’ credentials fit the role. Before they contact the candidates, they first go through the information stated on the resumes.

Fact No.2:

The hiring managers or HR managers are usually attracted by those resumes which are well presented, well structured and logical with no typo errors. The job applicants stand high chances to be called for interviews if their resumes are easy to read.

Fact No.3:

During the interviewing process, the candidates are assessed based on their fits with the roles, the companies and the teams.

Fact No.4:

Resume is an important tool during the job search process. It is more appropriate if you always keep your resume up-to-date. Your past achievements are required.

Fact No.5:

Those companies who value, engage and empower their employees will never make rash decision when hiring. Don’t be too happy if the employers hire you on the spot.

Fact No.6:

Being a job seeker, it is not proper for you to be too aggressive. Do not call the potential employers everyday to find out the status. If you do so, you will definitely annoy them.

Fact No.7:

Follow-up is essential. After you have completed the first interview, you are advised to drop a thank-you email to the hiring party.

Fact No.8:

Please bear in mind that it is not possible for a company to send a rejection letter to every single candidate due to the high-volume of resumes received. Hence, if you haven’t received any call from the companies for 2 weeks, you can assume that you are not a suitable candidate for the particular position.

Because technology jobs are specialist you need to make your job search is specialist too. This is where using a specialist recruitment consultants can prove beneficial. With detailed knowledge of employers and the industry in which you are seeking work, their guidance and advice can make the difference. Depending on your sector there are likely to be particular publications in which relevant jobs are advertised.

There are also certain employers that might take on new graduates or other first time job seekers. Large multi-national companies generally run graduate recruitment schemes for budding engineers or IT specialists. They also sometimes offer training schemes at lower levels for those without degrees. For those who prefer to remain in academia universities often offer research jobs within specialist departments.

While many people successfully get technology jobs by applying through these routes, they are not the only way to get your first break in technology. As well as applying for the jobs you see advertised in traditional ways, sign up with agencies to get the help of expert recruitment consultants. In technology, what you know is important: you need to find a job that matches your qualifications and skill level, as it is not always possible to learn on the job in the way that it can be in other sectors. This means that using specialist recruitment agencies who know the technology sector well is the best way to find a technology job. Within that, you should generally look for a recruitment agency that specialises in your particular area of technology, as it is a very broad sector. For example, the people who deal with IT recruitment are likely to have very different knowledge to those who recruit for pharmaceutical companies.

Using specialist recruitment consultants is not the only way to find a technology job, but it helps you spread the net wider. Many technology jobs will only ever be available through direct application, but there are many more that are only available through agencies.

Posts Related to Specialist Technology Recruitment Consultants

Where To Start The Graduate Job Search

Recruitment consultants are able to provide a graduate with a reasonably impartial view of the employment market, as they deal with a large number of ...

Find a Job Recruitment Agency

The customary way to find a job-agency was to look on in local streets, but now with the advent of internet there are many internet ...

Offers Great Jobs for Graduates

Many new students are often at a loss when they're deciding where and how to apply to job opportunities.

Take a quick look at winejobs.com and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I went recently to their site and entered “compliance” in the search by keyword box. The list of positions which involve some type of compliance duties ranged from winemaker to enologist to office manager to accountant to tasting room manager. That pretty much covers the spectrum of positions on most winery sites! And they’re all responsible for compliance! So for an individual who is interested in finding a position that is limited to just compliance the offerings are fairly slim.

I do have some suggestions that I offer anyone who is interested in getting their feet wet in the world of wine compliance:

1. Take compliance courses. Search these out at local colleges and universities. Keep current.

2. Become familiar with the TTB’s website. There are many tutorials and downloadable materials there for gaining a background related to requirements that anyone in compliance needs to be familiar with.

3. Become familiar with the Wine Institute’s website. Their site has a regularly updated map of the US which lists all the licensing and shipping parameters related to direct to consumer shipping.

4. Get a LinkedIn account and join the Wine and Spirits Recruiting network. Get active in discussions around compliance topics and post a comment about your own background and job search.

5. Be clear that compliance work is the right fit for you. Are you detail oriented, have natural organizational skills and like keeping track of statistics? Are you also a naturally diplomatic person? (This is important because of the wide range of people you come in contact with.)

6. Consider applying for harvest positions which may have at least some basic compliance duties. These positions are temporary but a great way to gain exposure to a winery site, and gain some experience.

Following these steps will give anyone looking to get a job in winery compliance a much better idea of what it involves, what the current topics are, the lingo and terminology, and ideally whether or not it is the area that fits them best.

I always try to encourage anyone who is wanting to get into compliance. For me it adds to the camaraderie that can often be missing in doing this type of work. Yes, compliance can be a lonely job, but it does NOT need to be!

The search for a job in winery compliance can also be a lonely one. My hope is that these suggested steps will light a path for anyone with a desire to break into this specialized area.

So what should you do to keep the employer from learning of your job search? A secret is no longer a secret if you tell co-workers or think you can get some job hunting in on company time. Never use your company email address or phone number in your undercover job search. Be sure you have a professional message on your answering machine. If you have to make a call back do it on your lunch hour. Further, if you start taking sick leave, or three-hour lunches for your job interviews; where you have to start telling stories about your absences the jig will soon be up. If you have to schedule an interview, tell the interviewer that you are busy at work but can meet after work and perhaps during lunch.

Job related references could be another problem. You do not want the prospective employer contacting your employer. Have references from other sources, like former co-workers or associates that you worked with at non-profits.

To be assured you job hunting stays undercover, try to limit the circulation of your resume and cover letter. Keep from posting the information on the public portion of job sites as you don’t want it spotted by your employer. On your LinkedIn profile do not indicate you are looking for another opportunity. When submitting your resume and cover letter indicate you expect the information to be treated confidently as you are currently employed.

In addition, all contact information on your resume and cover letter should be personal, never list anything that might be connected to your employer. You don’t need to be called at work by a prospective employer; it’s too easy for job hunting information to be leaked to co-workers.

Once you start your undercover job hunting campaign it’s real easy to consider yourself out of your current job and into a new position. Don’t use this mind-set as an excuse to slack off. Keep doing the best job as possible and resist the urge to let up on your required duties.

Comments you make on social networking sites should not indicate you are looking for other work. It’s too easy for your employer to get wind of your stealth job hunting campaign.

In summary, to keep your job hunt undercover, never do any job hunting activity during work hours, keep employer related contact information off your resume and cover letter. Critically look at using company time for job interviews, and attempt to schedule them after work. There is not need to involve co-workers in your job search, plus it’s too easy for your job hunting information to be leaked to your employer.

However, to stand a realistic shot at landing the job you want, there are certain questions you MUST ask yourself. Furthermore, the more honest you are in answering them, the greater your chances of success.

While you may possess all the enthusiasm in the world for a particular job, qualifications are another matter entirely. Yes, we all want a leadership role with all the perks it implies. But the difference between a Software Engineer and a Director of IT is vast, and if you’re looking to make a jump of this magnitude, be prepared for a fight. Understand going in that you’re competing with candidates who have at least one, and possibly several Director of IT jobs under their belt. What makes you a viable candidate? Perhaps more accurately, what do you have that they don’t? If you can’t answer these questions satisfactorily, then you’re probably aiming too high.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking, “I’ll try this job out and if it doesn’t work, leave after a year”. What makes a resume great is quantifiable accomplishments. They’re one of, if not THE most important thing recruiters and hiring agents look at when assessing a potential candidate, and rare is the job that will allow you to rack some up in less than 2-3 years. By all means research new career paths and potential positions. But when it comes time to find a job, be prepared to make a commitment.

Never underestimate your instincts when it comes to evaluating a resume. Having an effective structure, utilizing industry-specific keywords, and highlighting concrete successes are just one piece of the puzzle. Actively solicit feedback from colleagues to discover whether the language is ACTIVE instead of passive, whether there’s a nice flow from one section to another, and whether it’s obvious that both resume and cover letter are two parts of a whole. Investing the time to perfect your resume and cover letter will pay off in the form of a drastically shortened job search.

It is no secret that free apps get more attention on the marketplace. It is only natural to want something for free. It is also important to take into account that if you are looking for current openings, there is a good chance that you are currently unemployed. Even when receiving unemployment benefits, you need to be on a tight spending budget. It is true that some apps are worth paying for, but why when you can search from your Android phone for free?

Job seekers need to utilize every avenue of finding employment. This means that more than one career site must be searched. Let’s say Company 1 posts a listing on CareerBuilder and Company 2 posts an ad on Dice. If you only search CareerBuilder, you miss the job listings posted by Company 2. The ability to search more websites at once means you’ll find more current openings with one search and in less time. So look for a job finder app that enables you to search all the best career sites (both big and small).

A number of finders on the Android Market enable you to search for jobs. This is good, but you need to do more than just see open listings. You must be able to apply for jobs. Granted, some positions call for filling out an online job application. All good apps will link you to that online application so you can complete it via your phone. There are jobs in which you are instructed to email your resume. A good app will enable you to do so directly through the program. Generally speaking, you create your resume, upload it to the application, and are ready to apply for jobs.

There are a number of easy access features all job seekers should have access to. For example, let’s say you do a search via your Android phone and find a few positions that you’d like to apply for, but you don’t have the time to do it now. This is where the ability to email the job listing to yourself or the ability to add a listing to your favorites list (for easy access later) is ideal.

In short, you will find a number of finders on the Android market that enable you to job search on the go. Not all applications are created equal. Take the time to review the product description. See what features are available to you and how they can benefit from you in your hunt to find well-paying, stable jobs.

We would have to say absolutely not!Sometimes, we get so acclimated to that personal address that we simply forget about how others might perceive it. Add in the close scrutiny of a prospective employer, and your resume containing that social email address COULD be destined for the round file. Dead-giveaways unwittingly revealed in your email address name can lift the curtain about the ‘personal’ you… and absolutely need to be tightened up, or even replaced in favor of more ‘sanitized’ versions.

We are not saying you need to ‘ditch’ your personal / social email; you need to bury it or at the very least, not volunteer it when presenting an otherwise professional document for consideration for a job. Think about this… what would you think “Gnarly1941@emailaddress.com” might convey? Or “MaryJaneReefer@emailaddress.net?” Don’t laugh. We’ve seen similar email addresses like these on resumes more often than you would guess. A surprising number of people continue to send out resumes that have what We call ‘goofy’ email addresses.

Even if it isn’t goofy, an email address could potentially torpedo your job search before you even get it off the ground because the one that you are using doesn’t project a professional image. If you have to create a new ‘professional‘ email, then do so, but don’t forget to check it. Sometimes, candidates get so caught up checking their social email accounts that they forget to open up their business one… only to find a message from an employer dated 3 weeks ago waiting for them.

You can pretty much bet that opportunity has already passed and is now a dead end. Lack of response means the employer is moving on to the next candidate. It’s now up to you to conduct a quick review and see if your email address needs triage help, stat. Here are some key email address-naming tips to help you in maintaining your professionalism on your resume:

1) Stay away from things that might tip off your age. Avoid year of birth, graduation, or age references. Oh, and mentioning that you are a member of a retired persons group. It’s illegal, downright despicable, but yet difficult to prove – employers are discriminating against people because of their age, so you should make sure to remove age references completely.

2) Avoid political, gender, or religious references. You may be very passionate about a particular belief, cause, or affiliation, but you don’t need to be in an employer’s face about it. After all, they aren’t hiring you for what you believe… they are hiring you for what you can DO.

3) Be careful about health references too. Being a cancer survivor is great, but if you let an employer know that before you get to the interview, their concern about health care costs might cause them to ‘lose’ your application… if you know what I mean. Seriously. It can and does happen.

4) Keep It Simple, Stupid. If you have an email address that looks like some kind of code and doesn’t make any kind of logical sense, create an easy one to type into a message. No one likes peering at their keyboard to hunt and peck out a random assortment of letters and numbers.

5) Safest bet? Your name. Your name as the email address is your best bet. If you have a common name, then add some random number or variation that still makes it clear that this is your name.

Make sure to remove any and all objections an employer might find in your career materials and documents when making an application. Your future could depend on it!

Job sites are usually free for people who are looking for jobs to use, but employers typically have to pay to post job openings on job search sites, and to have access to the resume bank. The paying employers want to limit their search time, and the job sites try to assist them by utilizing efficient screening tools. The questionnaires that you have to answer on these sites are a big part of this screening tool. By answering these specific questions, you are aiding employers to quickly screen your profile either in or out.

When you are filling out a questionnaire or profile, you should be thinking about two things:

1. Who is going to be reading my answers, and for what intention?
2. What are these questions really asking me?

The Monster resume builder is a perfect example of a screening tool used to aid the employer. To start a My Monster account, it is required to fill in the fields for name, address, career level, and degree. Although the initial required information is similar to other types of job sites, Monster allows you to maintain five different resumes/profiles. This is a helpful feature for people with skills in more than one professional area. When job sites allow you to have multiple resumes/profiles, you should take full advantage of it. Make some of your profiles very broad and others very specific to increase your visibility to potential employers.

The Monster resume builder is a good example, because it is fairly conventional in the way that it breaks the profile and resume into thirteen distinct areas, including Career Objective, Target Job, Target Location, Salary, Work Status, Skills, Personal References, and Education. Most job sites will ask you to address the same or similar subject matter in registering and creating online profiles.

On Monster, one of the first screens you will be asked to complete includes “Title” and “Career Objective”. Monster offers examples to assist you in answering these questions. Using the advised answers is not in your best interest. Never lose track of the fact that employers pay Monster to save them time in recruiting by screening you out. Monster asks you to list a job title and to describe the type of position you are looking for under “Career Objective”. If you want to be screened in and increase your visibility with potential employers, you need to think beyond the question. Every field that is filled out on the job site is a keyword opportunity. Rather than completing the “Title” field as “Computer Programmer,” the space can be used to list relevant job skills like languages that you speak, software, and systems that you know.

The “Objective” field is capable of holding up to 2,000 characters – that is roughly half a resume worth of usable space for adding those valuable keywords. Again, following the examples provided by Monster would not be in your benefit. The site’s examples list a two- or three-sentence objective statement. A better use of the “Objective” space would be listing your professional profile, accomplishments, language, software, systems expertise, and any other relevant information from your resume. While answering the questions, you are essentially rebuilding your resume, so it is essential that you use an abundance of keywords and highlight your past professional success stories.

You are not always limited to a single answer, even in the case of check boxes. You should always test the site to see if it is possible to select more than one answer. Don’t ever assume your answers are limited to only one, even when the directions on the screen indicate that you are.

We all dread the salary requirements on an application or profile. Although the salary field is sandwiched between two “required” fields on most job sites, the salary field is not required. This means that you can, and should leave it blank. In circumstances where you are not able to leave the salary field blank, it is best to use a range, not a single figure.

On many job sites, you are asked to describe your ideal job and given a space that can hold up to 500 characters. Rather than answering the question, you should use this space to add more keywords to your profile. Keep in mind the screener is searching and retrieving candidates from a list of keywords that have been put into the system. The more keywords that appear in your profile, the further up on the list of matching resumes yours will be placed, and the more likely it is that your resume will actually get to a place where an actual person will see it. You should write in this space, “Job with opportunity to use…” then follow this statement with a lengthy list of pertinent keywords.

When answering questions relating to relocation, don’t make a snap decision. Only answer this question if you have to; and if you do, choose the broadest option possible. Even if you are able to list several preferred location, don’t. It is much wiser to keep your answers broad. A company or recruiter that is only interested in local candidates will utilize the address provided on your resume as a search parameter.

Even if you and your family are very happy in the city where you live, it is most wise to select “No preference” to questions related to your willingness to relocate. The situation that you are so happy about now may change in the future. Also since you should now have your Career Management/ Job Search database up and running, you should be able to store all of these opportunities for future consideration. Besides, any jobs that you interview for but reject, will serve as practice at honing your interview skills.

It is important to always read the small print on job sites, when completing online profiles and questionnaires, since the directions about the fields that are and are not required can be contradictory.

An additional common section on questionnaires pertains to work experience. It is likely that you will be given the opportunity to list all of your past jobs in chronological order. Your goal here is to build your online resume, not write a chronological narrative of your work history.

You should always utilize the work experience fields of questionnaires to put in descriptive stories about what you have done. Sometimes, you have to list responsibilities. For this, you should list your responsibilities and relationships with supervisors, then add achievements and keywords that are applicable to the context.

Also, recruiters and employers frequently look for candidates who are currently working for or have worked for specific companies or industry competitors. To make the most of their desire to hire a candidate with knowledge of the industry, make sure to take the time to list partners, customers, and companies that you have done business with. If you removed the specific information relating to your current employer from your resume, you can add that information to this list. It is most likely for you to come across online questionnaires and profiles in the following situations:

* Registering with a recruiting firm
* Posting your resume on a job board
* Applying for a job at a company
* Registering on a job site

In each situation, it is necessary to consider who is asking you the questions, and what they are looking to find out by asking the questions. Every audience is either trying to screen you in or screen you out, so carefully think about your response. You should always read the site instructions, and avoid answering questions relating to salary and relocation if possible, and add as many keyword to your profile as you are able.

These online profiles and questionnaires can affect your job search the same way your resume will. You need to treat this process with respect, and not rush through it. Make sure to spell-check and proof-read anything new that you are writing, and only post on websites that allow you to update and change your information at any time.

To be able to succeed in your job search, you need to be able to show your employer the skills that they are looking for. You can do this by preparing for your job interview. However, ordinary preparation for an interview will not be as effective with interviews found in a warehouse job search. Warehouse jobs are unique so they also require a unique way of handling applicants. Therefore, preparation is different then with ordinary preparation for ordinary job interviews.

Here are some effective suggestions to help guide you with your warehouse job search. Follow these tips and you will surely get the position you desire.

Dress Accordingly:

Ditch the suit and the tie, you will not need them. Your interviewer would not be as dressed up as the ordinary interviewers in more formal businesses. Wear something a level higher than your interviewer. A button down shirt, khaki slacks, and leather loafers will do. Make sure that your belt and your loafers have the same color. Bring an additional shirt as there is a chance that the interviewer might ask you lift stuff around the warehouse.

Maintain Proper Hygiene:

There is a chance that the warehouse may not be air-conditioned and probably is too warm. Never forget to shower and apply anti-perspirant. The heat in the warehouse and possibly the practical tests that the interviewers will give you will surely make you sweat a lot. Showering and applying anti-perspirant will minimize the odor of sweat in the body.

Avoid wearing cologne or perfume because; first, your interviewer might not like the scent and second, the cologne may combine with sweat which can produce disastrous body odor.

Review the Standard Operating Procedures in Warehouse:

Learn how to do the standard operating procedures in the warehouse. Study how some machines work. The interview may contain questions such as “What are the steps to lift a box safely?” or “Tell us about your experience with handling hazardous materials, such as paint and cleaners.”

Review your safety manuals on how to operate the machines in the warehouse. Learn how to explain the steps on how to do specific task in the warehouse as well as the rationale behind each step.

Prepare All Your Requirements:

Some machines need specific licenses to operate. Make sure that you have the original and 2 photocopies of the documents. Submit your resume so that it will highlight your best and it is relevant to the specific position that you are applying for.

Be organized with your papers. Avoid looking like a mess when attending an interview. Place all your requirements in folders or sturdy envelops.

Research About the company and the Position:

Know what kind of products the company works with and about the company’s business. Follow up on their history and get to know the position as well. Research the duties and responsibilities of the position you are applying for.

You sent a focused and well written thank you letter the day after the job interview. You did everything right. Now comes the bad news. Either you get a letter of rejection or more likely you make a follow-up phone call and are told they hired someone else. Rejections, fall into three main areas; they feel you won’t be able to do the job, you lack a key skill or qualification or you would not fit in with the culture of the department or the company.

If possible call the interviewer, again thank them for their time and ask them in order to help you in your future job search why you were not chosen for the job. Most will not tell you anything productive but on occasion they will answer the question. “Your interview skills were lacking or the person hired had more experience or the person hired has worked in the industry while you come from another industry, etc.” Listen politely to their concerns indicate you understand and again thank them for their time. Follow-up with a letter addressing their concerns but remind them of your qualifications for the job. Perhaps you can list an accomplishment that directly bears on the number one challenge in the job. Indicate your continued interest in the job.

This places you in an excellent position if the person hired stumbles or quits, rather than go through the whole expensive recruiting process again, you’ll be remembered and given a call. Or perhaps the workload increases and they have another identical slot to fill again you may have another job opportunity. Now go back and study the possible reasons for rejection. You might not be able to do the job. This requires more study of the job and how your skills would fit the job requirements. Also, you might do a better job crafting your stories of relevant accomplishments.

If you appear to be light or missing a key skill or qualification and it seems to be a requirement for a number of possible jobs, how can you overcome this problem? An immediate course of self-study, getting together with your mentor for their ideas, signing up for an appropriate course at a local college, attending a seminar or workshop should add the appropriate weight to your experience. You also should take a critical look at your job and other experience. Perhaps a job you performed for your local Chamber of Commerce will be an acceptable substitute. Your challenge is to package and communicate the skill so it satisfies the needs of the prospective employer.

Regarding the conclusion you might not fit in with the corporate culture is a difficult objection to overcome. It can be partly set aside by more research of the company. Uncover individuals who recently left the company (search on LinkedIn) and speak to them about the corporate environment. Do what you can to project an image and work ethic that would more closely fit the company culture. Use every rejection as a chance to learn and improve you job hunting strategy. What you learn can be properly reflected in your resume, cover letter and interview. As your skills increase you chances of finding and accepting the right job go way up.
