The first step in getting a job is therefore hope, without the hope that you will be successful in getting what you want, you will end up giving up on all efforts to achieve your goals. Then write a good and attractive curriculum vitae and a good cover letter. Make sure you get a friend to proof read your work so that you do not send an application and resume full of mistakes.

The next step will be to choose a job search method; you can use the door to door method where you will have to move from one office to another or the predictive method which involves hand picking a few areas where you suspect a presence of jobs.

Make sure you see the human resource manager or the hiring officer by yourself. Very many receptionists are not faithful with peoples applications. Always insist on seeing the hiring officer and present your case to them.

Register with recruitment agencies and out sourcing firms. Though many of them may charge you or even take part of your salary, it is better than not having a job. Recruitment agencies normally get job offers from many employers who you may not be able to meet when using the door to door job search method.

Lastly, tell you friend about your need for a job, many of them may be able to link you to others who may have job offers. There are many people today who continue to get jobs through friends.

What can you do to prepare for your medical device interview so that you’re the one who walks away with the job offer?

* Harness the power of LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a powerful resource for the job hunter. Once you have a profile, you’re good to go.

You can research companies you’re interested in, as well as the profiles of the people who work there. That’s going to give you a lot of information you can use. The LinkedIn pages of companies are usually a lot more informative than their corporate pages. By researching individual employees, you can see who’s who and get a clearer picture of what’s going on there.

You can get involved in groups and discussions on the medical device industry and the job market. Not only will you become known by people in the area, you’ll pick up quite a few nuggets of knowledge on companies, the industry, and job leads. Start with the Sales Cafe: Sales Rep Careers.

You can actively job search by using LinkedIn to contact hiring managers directly. You’ll get much better results than by going through traditional HR channels. Check out this video: LinkedIn Ninja Tricks to Bypass HR and Get the Job. It’s full of the insider advice you need to gracefully, professionally, and effectively get hiring managers to call you for an interview.

* Hire an interview coach

Seriously. It doesn’t even have to be me. Before you go into another interview, find a career coach. Maybe you just need a resume review. Maybe you need to put a positive spin on a dicey situation. Maybe you need an image check, a body language refresher, or better answers to interview questions. You’ll be amazed at how much faster you’ll get job offers with the right coaching. If pro athletes at the top of their games need coaches, you do too.

* Bring all the tools in your toolbox to the interview

So you know to bring your resume (plus extras for the other members of the management team you’ll be meeting). Have your references already lined up and prepped. Also, don’t forget your brag book and absolutely don’t forget your 30/60/90-day sales plan. (In case you’re not familiar with that, a 30/60/90-day plan is a written outline of what you will do when you start the job…how you’ll get trained, how you’ll bring yourself up to speed with the team and your customers, and how you’ll bring in new sales.) That’s the one document that impresses hiring managers above all others. You might think you can bring up your ideas as part of your conversation, but that’s an iffy possibility that doesn’t allow you to take control over your interview. You can control the interview with a 30/60/90-day sales plan.

As a job seeker, you can’t afford to have only one tool in your tool box. On any given day you want choices. Here are six lures to put in your job search bait box.

1. Network. It’s not who you know, it’s who your friends know that can really influence your success.

Now with companies exercising extreme caution when hiring, it makes even more sense to find a way into the organization, someone with a personal connection who is willing to sponsor you into the organization.

Networking accounts for more than 65 percent of jobs and the further up the career ladder you go the higher that percentage.

2. Make a job. Target the organization of your dreams. Determine where you want to work, then identify the organization’s unmet needs.

Write a letter to the person with the authority to hire you and make a case for how the company will profit by hiring you. Ask for a meeting. Don’t send your résumé; instead, bring it to the meeting and offer it, only if asked. Arrive to your business meeting prepared to demonstrate your value.

3. Identify unlikely or lesser known organizations in your job hunt zone. Contact the chamber of commerce for a listing of member companies or check to see if their publication lists all local organizations within their member cities.

The Monterey County Free Libraries have a reference database that allows users to identify companies by city and state, size, number of employees and annual revenue. Use it to widen your job search prospects.

4. Attend job fairs. There are two well-publicized job fairs in Monterey every spring and numerous other ones in the Bay Area, if you are considering relocation. Prepare in advance. Arrive early, with plenty of enthusiasm and lots of resumes. Rank companies of interest and approach in reverse order – that way you can warm up for your number one choice.

5. Volunteer. Recently, one of my clients decided to volunteer for an organization close to her heart. In the past, her job had kept her so busy she had no time for anything except work.

Without a job, she felt at loose ends without some structure in her life. So in addition to looking for work, she filled in some of her gap time by volunteering. As a result, the organization’s executive director got to know her and offered her an opportunity to interview for an open position.

6. Go online. Forgo the mega-job search sites and focus on the smaller, local ones. Also check the listings for specific companies that interest you.

The kicker is to limit yourself to trolling the Internet for jobs to just two hours a week. Any other time spent on the Internet should be focused on researching industries and companies and making bona fide networking connections that move you closer to an interview.

1. Never pay an agency a fee for helping you find a job! All reputable agencies receive payment from their client where they place the candidate…that’s you!

2. Even if the assignment is temporary, don’t be fooled, your performance is being assessed for consideration for permanent employment.

3. Sometimes a company will extend job offers on the spot at career expos. The offers are usually contingent on the passing of a drug screen and background check.

4. Join a professional association and volunteer to assist with their events, you will be sure to network with key industry professionals.

5. If you believe you can perform the job duties but are lacking the degree or certification still go ahead and apply. For certain roles the need for a degree or certification can be waived. Also, for some jobs if you show that you have a plan in place to complete your degree or certification within a certain time-frame you will be considered for the role.

6. Relocation assistance is usually reserved for upper level management roles. If a position is listed as not providing relocation assistance be prepared to make the move without any help. Being open to relocation has been crucial in helping many people receive wonderful job opportunities and upward mobility in their careers. If you are flexible and open to relocating without assistance you will become a stronger candidate. At some appropriate time in the interview process (perhaps after a successful in-person interview) inform the recruiter that you are aware that no relocation assistance is provided but you would be grateful for any type of assistance if an offer were to be extended. Often H.R. will be able to arrange for a bonus of anywhere from $1,000 – $5,000 to be included in the offer to offset relocation expenses.

7. The average yearly cost to provide healthcare benefits to an employee is $9,312 and climbing!

8. If you are faced with having to take a pay-cut in order to accept an offer with a more prestigious company you would be wise to accept the offer. In the long-run having worked for the prestigious, highly reputable company will enhance your career. Your background will appear more desirable to recruiters and hiring managers. You will undoubtedly learn skills and processes that will strengthen your ability to perform in the workplace.

9. One of the biggest lies out there is that a resume needs to be one page long. It is perfectly fine to have a resume up to three pages long. If you are a seasoned professional you will probably need more than one page to list your job duties and overall skill-set.

10. Don’t list the date that you graduated from college on your resume.

11. Don’t include in your resume, cover letter or email little sayings; no one cares if you believe that ‘an apple a day, keeps the doctor away’ or whatever your passion/belief is.

12. There are 4 main reasons why a recruiter will quickly pass up your profile that you have created on their career site, they are: Poor grammar and spelling. Improper usernames and passwords. Applying to too many jobs, i.e. applying to over 30 jobs will make you appear as though you don’t know what you are looking for. A lousy resume that lacks critical information.

13. There is a great demand for over-50 applicants to fill positions of employment. Mature workers bring with them dependability and a rich source of knowledge. If you are right for the role, then you are right for the role whether you are 29 or 59 years of age…especially if you have the right certifications or degrees.

14. It is a major turn-off for a recruiter to see the word ‘confidential’ listed anywhere on a resume.

15. For some candidates it can be a fine line between persistence and stalking the recruiter. Leave no more than just one voice message and email per week for the recruiter.

16. When you return a call or email from a recruiter provide your first and last name, indicate the nature of your call and the best way to get back in touch with you. Most recruiters have over 50 candidates that they interact with on a weekly basis thus it will be frustrating for them to receive a return call from ‘Nancy’; don’t assume you are on a first name basis…unless of course you are the stalker mentioned in the previous secret. Also, do not sign any of your email with only your first name. Good communication skills are becoming more and more difficult to find from job seekers. Taking the time to address the recruiter in a detailed and professional manner will put you heads and tails above the other candidates.

17. To be as visible as possible, post your resume on the job boards, create profiles on the social networks and join internet user groups.

18. When asked about your computer skills don’t reply, “All of the Microsoft Suite.” Instead break down the exact MS software you have experience with, i.e. MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint. Don’t forget to mention which email software you use, whether it be Outlook, Lotus Notes or an in-house package.

19. Don’t be vague and general when answering interview questions. Try to be as specific and detailed as possible.

20. One of the most under-rated (by job seekers) yet most in-demand skills, that the hiring authority is looking for in a candidate, is the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel. Excellent written communication skills are especially in demand. Well thought out email messages free of spelling and grammatical errors will set you apart from everyone else.

21. Never to proceed to conduct a phone interview if the conditions are not ideal. Don’t try to eat, drink, wash dishes, supervise children or take a long vigorous walk (we can hear your slight panting loud and clear) while conducting a phone screen.

22. No matter how informal the interview setting the interviewer should never ask you questions pertaining to your race, age, religion, whether or not you are pregnant or disabled. If an interviewer blatantly or mistakenly asks you a question relative to one of these topics, simply respond with, ‘I’d rather not answer that question.’ and quickly change the subject.

23. During the final interview process it is ok to mention any impending vacations or special events that you have already arranged and will require time off for if hired. I have never witnessed a qualified candidate being turned down for a job offer because they will need time off within a few weeks of their start date. Some companies will allow you to use your paid vacation time up front while others will let you have the time off without pay but I have never heard of a company not letting you take the time off if you mentioned the need to take the time off prior to an offer being extended to you.

24. After you agree to the terms of your offer letter you should prepare a letter for your current employer informing them that you are resigning. Thank your employer for the opportunity to work with them and be sure to list the date that you intend to be your last day of employment.

If you’ve made the decision to find a new job or a new career and are currently employed, keeping your hunt a secret can be hard – but it’s essential to keeping your current job intact until you are ready to officially make your move. Keep your job search under wraps and keep your personal business personal by following these tips for privacy.

Use your own time and property.

Resist the temptation to use your current company’s resources to look for a job. This includes your work computer, your work email address, fax machines, telephones and even stationery, envelopes and the postage meter (yes, some people do help themselves to this company owned property). Even spending time for which you are being paid to research, write or even think about your job search takes you away from the obligation you have made to your current employer — to some it is considered a form of stealing. If you absolutely must attend to phone calls or emails regarding your job search, follow up using your own cell phone or laptop when on your lunch break away from the office.

Network with discretion.

If you are planning to keep your job search undercover, you need to use discretion when speaking to others about your plans. Only share details with personal contacts whom you know will maintain your privacy and network with those outside your company who may help you gain entry into their business. Distributing your resume should also follow this guideline of discretion. You may not want to do a mass mailing of your resume, especially if you are in an industry where everyone knows everyone – the word could get back to your current boss. On job boards, you also often have the option to create confidential resumes that keep your name and contact information under wraps. You will want to swap out your name with the phrase “confidential candidate” and secure a non-identifying email address through a free service such as Yahoo!mail or Gmail. Taking additional precautions may also be necessary to keep your resume confidential such as describing your employer in general terms such as “leading apparel retailer” “or large advertising agency”.

Choose references carefully.

Obviously, if you are flying under the radar on your job search, you cannot list your current supervisor as a reference. If you have close contacts in the company with whom you have confided, they may be used as references. Other people outside your organization who are willing to vouch for your credentials, character and skill set include professors, clients, contacts from volunteer activities you are involved with and past employers.

Like marketing, a search for a job has many perspectives to consider making. Every experience teaches you something new. Here are the five basic rules, in the conduct of a search for a job.

1. Planning

When people considering planning, they typically consider things such as vacations or savings, but a job seeker should consider the vital role that planning plays in building the future of any individual. The likelihood of finding your ideal career and achieving your goals increase dramatically if you plan and create manageable goals. When you opt to conduct a job search, consider your destination and objective, it will be helpful in long-term decision-making.

2. Preparing

A thorough check up of the personal inventory can help you identify the personal talents and skills. Develop skills that match the requirements of the job. Understanding your skills and abilities will help answer the all-important question from an employer that inquires on why you are the most suitable candidate for the job. Prior to conducting a job search consider creating a list of skills and abilities, as well as those skills you would like to develop. Prepare your resume well so that all-important details are highlighted. Remember, if you do not tell the employer about yourself and what attributes you bring to the company, they will never know and this lack of awareness will influence how successful your job search goes.

3. Practicing

We at Jobcomb encourage you to include your friends and family. Practice potential questions well. Consider important details such as strengths and weaknesses. You should also review the job description for each job you find interesting during your job search because hints to what might be asked are included within that description.

4. Performance

Your job search is not just limited to preparation. Your wardrobe, appearance, posture, attitude, and confidence also play a major role. Understanding the importance of a first impression is vital. A smile and a positive attitude can influence your level of success during a job search. Remember, avoid negative comments and be punctual to interviews and any jobs you may hold. In addition, when you conduct a job search and find what interests you on sites such as Jobcomb, remember to research the companies because your knowledge of a company and ability to ask questions when talking with a prospective employer indicate a sincere interest.

5. Review your strengths and weaknesses

Once you conclude the interview process, reflect on the interview process. What do you believe were your strengths and weaknesses? Use these reflections to improve on future interviews. However, as you interview it is critical to realize the process is not complete when you exit an interview. You should submit a thank you letter to the employer. It can include few words of gratitude for taking out precious time from their busy schedule.

Always keep in mind that your positive approach to the job search and the interview process is the key to success. Never give up and even though you will come across various ups and downs, stay determined throughout your journey.

I’m sure you have heard the benefits of investing in a resume writer and / or a job coach to assist you in finding employment. Certainly, this investment in you and your job be profitable in many ways, including the ability to you from your specialized field, and then optimize your skills and strengths in the middle of the competition and the quality of the interviews.

However there are additional investments you should be making in your job search that lend themselves to rich and rewarding payoffs. Have you looked at your home, your health and your time-off activities? Have you set up a system for yourself that provides you with adequate job search support?

Here are some examples:

1. Investment in your health
Are you taking care of yourself? Have you been putting off your yearly physical, your trip to the dentist or chiropractor? Do you invest in eating organic food? Do you get out for a few minutes each day for some exercise and fresh air? Your monetary investment to do this is relatively small but your short and long term payoff is vit al to keeping stress under control and your feeling of well being.

2. Investment in activities you enjoy
Investing in yourself, in activities you enjoy and that relax you are MORE important and need to be INCREASED during your job search. Feel like you can’t find the time? Look at where you spend your time during the day, then commit to cutting out ONE activity that you don’t absolutely need to be doing. Replace it with something you love to do, be it spending time with your family, playing tennis, bike riding or reading a book. The more relaxed and balanced you are, the more energy and focus you will have to give your job search.

3. Investment in your surroundings
Is your office or home a mess? Investment in a clean work and living space will add to your feeling of peace. I have a young child and know how hard it can be to keep things tidy! But each morning I clean my office so I can think clearly, and be present and creative for my clients. In other words, your surroundings can mirror your mental outlook.

4. Investment in your clarity
If you are struggling with your confidence and your self worth regarding your job search, then grab a pen and paper and write out 30 valuable skills, strengths and traits that you can bring to your employer(s). Getting clear here will help you get in touch with how much you really do have to offer. We often devalue our professional worth, so this exercise will serve to fill in the gaps if you are leaving out any critical points in your resume.

5. Investment in job search “high payoff” activities.
Are you licking stamps and envelopes and running to the printer? Why not consider hiring someone to handle these entry level tasks for you during your job search so you can invest your time focusing on your high payoff activities, such as targeting employers, following up with phone calls and preparing for interviews?

You get so much more done with a little help! Your investment in hiring the neighbor’s teenager across the street (or your own, if you have one) will definitely kick your job search results into high gear.

So, what can you invest in right now that makes you feel good, more balanced and less stressed?
