Many ex-felons could have changed for the better if only they were given a good opportunity to do so. Nevertheless, even though the law protects ex-felons for fair treatment to job opportunities, jobs remain difficult to come by. The instability of our economy coupled with the increasing competitiveness of other job seekers just makes matter worse. It’s nobody’s fault that jobs are hard to come by. According to studies, about 80% of US companies background-check their applicants. And sadly, many ex-felons seeking jobs just don’t stand a chance against the average applicant.

It is no secret that free apps get more attention on the marketplace. It is only natural to want something for free. It is also important to take into account that if you are looking for current openings, there is a good chance that you are currently unemployed. The following 4 steps can help you make the most of your reference selection process.
1. Select someone you’ve actually worked with. This may sound like a “duh” moment, but you might be surprised at how many job seekers ask their buddies to serve as references. Usually, it’s not a great choice. They pick a friend they’ve never worked with because they know their friend likes them and speaks well of them. But when a prospective employer asks pointed questions and receives little information of actual value or relevance, that reference will be worth less than nothing. It may even be detrimental, causing the employer to wonder if you didn’t have enough decent work-related references. The only exception to the “friend-only” principle is if you need a character reference and your friend is well-known within your field, and trusted. Otherwise, don’t do it.

From the job seeker’s perspective, mass sites force job seekers to look through opportunity listings that may be irrelevant to their search. Unless one is extremely specific with the terms input for the search, the results yielded can be quite broad. For example if you were looking for a position as a special kind of construction planner, but simply entered “planner”, the results would be extremely diverse, forcing you to look closely at the results. Furthermore, the people that post the jobs are not always specific about the job title of the position they post. One may see job titles like “Junior Planner” or “Planner III” denoting the level of some kind of planner but not elaborating on the kind of planner. Who are these ads for Urban, Financial, Construction, Event or some other kind of planner?

Job search success is not a mere bagatelle in any market, and success has as much to do with approach and technique, as it has to do with what you offer and the type of position you seek.
So if any job will do, and just applying to adverts is your choice, then expect to go beyond the average current unemployment time scale of 37 weeks. But if you know what you want, and apply some easily learnt techniques that communicate your value clearly to a potential employer, then job search success can easily be yours. It really is just a matter of choice, application and resultant success.

One: Set some New Year goals and do them. Everyone has new year resolutions, and at least 80% never keep them. This year set goals instead, of making resolutions. Even better than goals, make a plan, it is much easier to have a plan and stick to it than it is a goal or a resolution.
