No matter how hard you work, how many accomplishments you have, no one will notice if you do not showcase it! When this world is full of qualified and competent people, you need more than ability to stand out among the crowd. There is one absolutely crucial element that a lot of people have left out and adding this one single thing will top off that long list of accomplishments you have been selling to your boss: Passion. That’s right, I mentioned something that has nothing to do with your work performance. You need to stand out among other people by showing you are passionate about what you do. The business world is shifting towards leading with passion, as willingness to work hard just doesn’t cut it anymore. You have to be passionate about what you do, and that’s the only way you will succeed. Even if you lack the experience, if you have the passion, your boss will believe that you can learn to get there.

However, to stand a realistic shot at landing the job you want, there are certain questions you MUST ask yourself. Furthermore, the more honest you are in answering them, the greater your chances of success.
While you may possess all the enthusiasm in the world for a particular job, qualifications are another matter entirely. Yes, we all want a leadership role with all the perks it implies. But the difference between a Software Engineer and a Director of IT is vast, and if you’re looking to make a jump of this magnitude, be prepared for a fight. Understand going in that you’re competing with candidates who have at least one, and possibly several Director of IT jobs under their belt. What makes you a viable candidate? Perhaps more accurately, what do you have that they don’t? If you can’t answer these questions satisfactorily, then you’re probably aiming too high.

If you’re worried about getting caught during your job search, don’t fret. There are ways to make sure your search is both covert and successful. Avoid Using Your Employer’s Tools While Job Seeking. The surefire way to get caught conducting a job search is by using your work e-mail address, office equipment, or company telephone. You may be accustomed to a certain level of privacy in your office as an executive, but it is best not to take this privacy for granted since you never know who might read your e-mails, pick up documents from your printer, or answer your telephone.

If I could choose between help from my manicurist or the Managing Director of a bulge-bracket investment bank, then of course I would go for the MD. (This assumes you are ready to make your pitch; the MD should not be someone you practice your pitch with.) If access is equal and you are ready to talk intelligently about your search, you should always pick the person who you think is more immediately relevant to your search.

One of my former coaching clients should have wrapped up her within a few months. But then with budgets tightening, the job that she seemed poised to get was not filled after all. This happened to her twice before her third job offer finally stuck. The first time it happened, she had slowed down the pace with other companies in play and then had to rebuild her momentum again. The second time she kept her other searches going simultaneously even when one seems promising. When the second imminent offer fell through, she barely missed a beat. Score one for Press Forward.

As a Girl Scout Leader, our motto is “Be Prepared”! You should always have an updated resume with your current position ready to send out, even if you are not really looking. The chance that you have been waiting for to break into a new role may be a phone call away, and if the opportunity presents itself, you will need to move quickly. In addition to having your resume ready to go, be sure to have a current list of professional references. Ask for a letter of recommendation whenever you transition from one department, role or company to another. In cases where whole departments have been downsized or disbanded, be sure to stay in touch with managers and co-workers so that they are reachable when you need them. The current workforce is a very dynamic environment, so keep an updated list of references and contact information.

Unfortunately attempting to get a better and higher paying job after we leave high school is not incessantly as easy as we would consider. At the age of 18 I moved to a big city where I had hoped to get a good job while putting myself through full time college.
I snapped up the first job that I was able to get at Ruby Tuesdays. It wasn’t a tough job – but it wasn’t perfect either and I wasn’t able to make good tips. When you are searching for a job it assists to follow a couple of rules.
