Take Control of the Job Interview
Posted in Careers on November 25th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to commentCan it really take that much? Look at them! They want to be entertained. They want to find the right job candidate. They want you to be the right person for the job. You can’t bring your puppy into the interview to entertain them. Sure, that would get you noticed, but it probably wouldn’t get you the job.
Think about the industry you are interviewing for. What is always the most exciting part of any industry or subject? It’s the new stuff. It’s the things that are written about in the trade magazines and blogs. That’s what your interviewer will talk about in the hallway between interviews. The cutting edge stuff is what interests them.
Do you know the cutting edge? Do you know the job you are asking for? Tell them.
Take control of the interview. Talk about the current events of that industry. It will not be hard to work that in to the conversation. And, it will get the attention of the interviewer.
You may wonder what happens if the interviewer is strictly an administrative type that isn’t up to date on their own industry. That doesn’t matter. If you are passionate about the industry, the interviewer will know. After all, they hear that kind of talk every day from their coworkers. They will tell the people they work with that you sound just like the rest of the people in the company.
And that’s a good thing.
Take control of the job interview as soon as you can. Ask the interviewer questions. Talk about the industry. Show your passion. The interviewer will not care and will not ask about your biggest weakness, so you’ll avoid that question. If you want it, you will get the job.
