Traditional Family Practice Jobs
While many doctors consider these aspects of family practice jobs as benefits, others find them to be fairly mundane and even tedious. Some people simply enjoy experiencing new things and seeing new sights on a regular basis, and when you are tied to the same old office every day and seeing typically the same patients on a regular basis, the stability of the job can be pretty boring for some people.
As an alternative to family practice jobs, many doctors instead will choose to work as locum tenens. Locum tenens are contract doctors who will accept temporary work in a variety of settings ranging from small town doctor’s office to large metro hospitals. The locum tenens doctor will have the option of choosing which contracts he or she accepts, so there is a great deal of flexibility in planning for time off to explore the world as well the ability to choose where you work and for how long.
These locum tenens doctors can enjoy the relatively quiet setting of family practice jobs and then switch over to a faster-paced job in a busy hospital for their next job to add some variety to their work hours. They are typically well-compensated with a complete package that often includes reimbursement for housing, travel, malpractice insurance, and even licensing.
The fact is that working in a stable office environment for your entire career is a big positive for some people, and for others it just isn’t a great fit. Consider what you want out of life and make a decision that you will enjoy for years to come.
